Traditionally setsubun (節分) marks the day before the beginning of a new season, but in post-Edo times the term has become strongly associated with the beginning of spring. More generally, it is well-known for visitors chanting of “Fortune enter, demons go away!” (福は内、鬼は外) while tossing beans to chase away demons. At Senso-ji, however, there are no demons in front of the Kannon, who is said to be enshrined in the temple, and so chants of “Long life and good fortune, enter!” (千秋万歳福は内) are heard instead. After the bean tossing the ritual “Seven Deities of Good Fortune Dance” is performed for well-wishers.
