Daikakuji (大覚寺) is a prestigious temple complex in western Kyoto, serving as the head of the Daikaku-ji school of Shingon Buddhism. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Imperial Family; it was originally established in the early 9th century as a detachment palace for Emperor Saga. Following his death, the villa was converted into a temple in 876 AD. Because of its royal origins, the temple buildings—connected by elevated wooden walkways—reflect the elegant shinden-zukuri architectural style typically reserved for palaces.
The temple is renowned for its Heart Sutra Hall (Shingyōden), which houses a handwritten copy of the Heart Sutra by Emperor Saga. Legend tells that during a devastating famine, the monk Kobo Daishi advised the Emperor to copy the sutra as an act of devotion. Upon its completion, the famine reportedly broke. This “Heart Sutra of Peace” remains sealed, traditionally shown to the public only once every sixty years. While exploring the halls, visitors will notice the uguisubari (nightingale floors), which emit a chirping sound when stepped upon to alert the inhabitants of any intruders.

The grounds are dominated by Osawa Pond, the oldest surviving artificial garden pond in Japan. Designed to resemble a lake in China, it was a centerpiece for imperial moon-viewing parties. Today, this tradition continues with the Kangetsu-no-yube festival in mid-autumn. The pond is particularly breathtaking in November, when its perimeter of cherry and maple trees is artistically illuminated after dark. With the two-tiered Shingyo Pagoda reflected in the still water, Daikakuji remains one of the most serene and historically rich retreats in the Sagano district.
