The Asahikawa Winter Festival is Hokkaido’s second-largest winter celebration (after the Sapporo Snow Festival), held every year in early February. Located in the center of the prefecture, the event offers a spacious and community-focused alternative to the Sapporo Snow Festival’s massive crowds. The primary festival grounds are situated along the banks of the Ishikari River at the Asahibashi Site. This expansive riverside venue allows for the construction of truly colossal snow architecture. The festival is globally renowned for building some of the largest snow sculptures on the planet, with past creations securing Guinness World Records for their immense snow volume.
At the center of the riverside venue stands the festival’s flagship masterpiece, a colossal snow stage that often doubles as an iconic architectural replica. This massive structure serves as the backdrop for musical performances. A major highlight for attendees is the giant snow slide, stretching over one hundred meters in length, providing thrilling rides. Throughout the grounds, smaller community-built sculptures and interactive snow mazes create a playful atmosphere. As evening approaches, the towering snow structures are dramatically illuminated, and spectacular fireworks displays light up the night sky.
A secondary festival site is located along the Heiwa Dori pedestrian street, stretching directly from the central railway station. This urban corridor hosts an international ice carving competition, displaying dozens of meticulously crafted, illuminated ice sculptures. Free shuttle buses operate between the railway station and the riverside venue to ensure easy transit. The combination of colossal snow architecture, intricate ice carving, and welcoming local spirit makes this celebration an unforgettable destination.
