The July Nagoya Basho is one of six annual honbasho (professional sumo tournaments) held over fifteen consecutive days. As the only top-tier tournament in the Chubu region, it is now hosted at the IG Arena, a state-of-the-art venue located near Nagoya Castle. While the event is broadcast on NHK, television cannot replicate the intensity of sitting among thousands of fans as sumo wrestlers poise behind the white lines to lunge. The city’s notorious summer humidity adds a layer of physical endurance to the bouts, making it a uniquely grueling stop on the circuit. See here for a brief introduction to the sport.
The move to the IG Arena provides spectators with improved sightlines and modern amenities while maintaining the tradition of masu-seki (box seating). Because the arena is situated within Meijo Park, many fans combine a day at the tournament with a visit to the adjacent Nagoya Castle. Tickets for the July tournament typically go on sale in late May and often sell out quickly for the final weekend. Access is most convenient via the Meijo Line to Nagoyajo Station, which is just a short walk from the arena’s main entrance.
