The Kitazawa Hachiman Festival is a dynamic two-day event held in early September that completely transforms the streets south of Shimokitazawa Station. While the neighborhood is famous for its indie music and vintage scene, this weekend brings a wave of traditional community spirit. Multiple neighborhood mikoshi (portable shrines) are passionately carried through the narrow, bustling alleys, accompanied by rhythmic taiko drums and energetic chants.
Live stage performances and traditional music generally kick off at 1:00 PM on Saturday. Dozens of classic food stalls line the local streets on both days. The historic Kitazawa Hachiman Shrine, serving as the main festival hub, is about a 10-minute walk south of the station.
