While the original Awa Dance Festival in Tokushima is Japan’s largest, the Koganei Awa Odori (小金井阿波おどり) is one of the most prominent suburban alternatives in western Tokyo. Held annually during the last weekend of July, the festival brings the high-energy “Fool’s Dance” to the streets surrounding Musashi-Koganei Station. The event features approximately 25 ren (dance groups) performing synchronized routines to the rhythmic pulse of taiko drums and flutes. Main performances take place between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, with the station’s North and South exits transforming into vibrant stages lined with stalls selling kaki-gori and other seasonal treats.
Because the festival is split between the North and South plazas of Musashi-Koganei Station, spectators can easily move between different performance “stations” using the station’s main concourse. The South Exit area typically hosts the larger, more traditional ren, while the North Exit features a mix of local community groups and high-energy drumming displays. Due to its location on the JR Chuo Line, the event attracts significant crowds from central Tokyo; it is advisable to arrive by 5:30 PM to secure a standing spot along the primary parade routes before the dancers begin their evening processions.
