The Mount Takao Autumn Leaves Festival (高尾山もみじまつり) celebrates the peak of Tokyo’s vibrant autumn season throughout November. While the brilliant crimson and gold momiji (maple) foliage is the primary draw, the festival adds a festive layer with cultural performances at the Kiyotaki Station plaza. On weekends and national holidays, visitors can enjoy taiko drumming, folk dancing, and musical recitals between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The atmosphere is further enriched by stalls selling local sake and traditional crafts, offering a perfect seasonal escape that blends natural beauty with lively Japanese heritage. See the official event schedule here.
The festival is centered at the base of the mountain, just a five-minute walk from Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Line. While the stage performances are localized at the Kiyotaki plaza, the best foliage viewing is found along Trail 1 or by taking the cable car and chairlift halfway up the mountain. Because this is one of Tokyo’s most popular autumn destinations, the plaza and trails become exceptionally crowded on weekends. Arriving before 9:00 AM is highly recommended to enjoy the performances and secure a spot on the cable car before the peak midday rush.
