The Sapporo Lilac Festival (さっぽろライラックまつり) has signaled the arrival of the Hokkaido summer since 1959, shortly before the lilac was designated the city’s official tree in 1960. The festival’s heart is Odori Park, where approximately 400 trees erupt in purple and white blossoms. This main venue hosts a variety of events, including an outdoor tea ceremony and a popular wine garden featuring local Hokkaido labels. A secondary, more tranquil celebration occurs at Kawashimo Park, which boasts a world-class collection of 1,700 trees. Together, they offer a fragrant and picturesque welcome to the warmer months.
Odori Park is the most accessible venue, located directly above the Odori Subway Station in central Sapporo. While the flowers are the main draw, the “Wine Garden” at Odori 7-chome is a major culinary highlight, offering a chance to sample regional vintages paired with Hokkaido cheeses. Kawashimo Park, located in the Shiroishi ward, offers a “Lilac Forest” with 200 different varieties, making it the preferred spot for horticultural enthusiasts. Because the blooming period is brief, visitors are encouraged to check local flowering reports to ensure they catch the peak of the fragrance.
