The Shimbashi Koichi Festival (新橋こいち祭) is a high-energy summer event, specifically designed to cater to the local “salaryman” community. Centered at the SL Plaza and Sakurada Park on the west side of Shimbashi Station, the festivities transform this bustling business district into a traditional matsuri hub. While events commence at noon, the vibrancy peaks in the evening when office workers from Shiodome and surrounding areas join the crowds. Key attractions include the Friday evening yukata beauty contest at SL Plaza, a terrace beer garden on the New Shimbashi Building’s 4th floor, and classic bon dancing nightly from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
The festival is easily accessible via the Hibiya Exit of JR Shimbashi Station, which opens directly onto the SL Plaza. During the event, the plaza stage becomes the focal point for live performances and the contest, while the adjacent Sakurada Park is filled with traditional food stalls and games. Because the area is a major transport hub, the festival becomes exceptionally crowded during the evening commute. For those wishing to participate in the bon dancing, the circle usually forms around the iconic C11 steam locomotive, where dancers of all skill levels are encouraged to join the rhythmic procession.
