The vendors of Tsukiji’s outer market gather in an area specially reserved for the festival to put on workshops and cookery displays for visitors. More a community event than your typical food market, the festival emphasizes “food education,” featuring professional demonstrations of fish filleting and traditional knife-sharpening techniques. There is also a Kirin beer stand and, of course, plenty of food for sale, with stalls offering delicacies like grilled scallops, tamagoyaki, and fresh sashimi. It provides a rare opportunity to sample high-end ingredients from wholesalers in a relaxed, festive outdoor setting alongside local residents and culinary professionals.
The “Sengyo Matsuri” fresh fish market portion of the event begins at 9:00 AM, and premium catches are typically sold out within the first two hours. While the food stalls and beer garden remain active until late afternoon, the specialized workshops—such as the popular professional knife-sharpening clinic—require on-site sign-ups via a physical queue near the main information booth.
