The Yokohama Port Festival (Kaiko-sai) commemorates the anniversary of the port’s 1859 opening, a pivotal moment in Japan’s modernization. Held annually in early June within the Minato Mirai district, the festival offers a diverse program of maritime and land events. Highlights include a dramatic “Beam Spectacle” featuring lasers and fireworks, live stage performances at Rinko Park, and interactive harbor activities for children. This vibrant celebration honors Yokohama’s history as a pioneer in international trade and cultural exchange.
The festival is centered around Rinko Park and the surrounding waters of the Minato Mirai 21 area, accessible via a short walk from Minatomirai Station or Sakuragicho Station. During the day, the harbor comes alive with sea parades, fireboat demonstrations, and opportunities for children to try kayaking or board visiting ships. The evening finale, held on the final night, is particularly famous for its precision-timed pyrotechnics and high-tech light show. Because this is one of the region’s first major summer events, the waterfront areas reach capacity early; arriving in the afternoon is recommended to secure a viewing spot for the evening performances.
