The Jizo-son Hosan Bon Odori at Zojoji Temple is a visually stunning summer tradition, set against the striking contrast of the temple’s ancient main hall and the glowing Tokyo Tower. Held in late July, the festival honors the temple’s 1,000 stone Jizo statues, which are famously decorated with red caps and windmills. The courtyard comes alive with Bon Odori dancing as participants in yukata circle a central wooden scaffold. Rhythmic taiko drumming and local yatai food stalls create a nostalgic atmosphere, making it one of Minato’s most soulful and photographed community gatherings.
The temple grounds are a three-minute walk from Onarimon Station (Mita Line) or five minutes from Shibakoen Station. While the dancing usually begins around 6:00 PM, the food stalls are active earlier in the afternoon. This event is particularly popular with photographers due to the “old meets new” aesthetic of the temple silhouetted against the modern tower. Admission is free, and visitors are encouraged to join the dance circle, even if they aren’t familiar with the specific steps, as the community atmosphere is exceptionally welcoming to newcomers.
