Hokokuji Temple (報国寺), established in 1334, serves as a serene sanctuary belonging to the Rinzai sect’s Kencho-ji school. Steeped in samurai history, it was originally founded by the priest Tengan Eko and functioned as the primary family temple for both the Ashikaga and Uesugi clans during the Muromachi period. While its historical pedigree is significant—marked by the “yagura” caves that serve as the final resting place for the Ashikaga family—the temple is more popularly recognized today as Kamakura’s “Bamboo Temple.”

The primary attraction is the breathtaking bamboo grove located directly behind the main hall. This small but dense forest contains over 2,000 towering moso bamboo stalks that rise toward the sky, creating an emerald canopy that filters sunlight into a shimmering, ethereal glow. A winding stone path leads visitors through the stalks, past weathered stone statues and a meticulously maintained moss garden. Hidden within this grove is the Kyotachi tea house, where guests can enjoy a bowl of whisked matcha and a traditional sweet while listening to the rhythmic rustle of the bamboo leaves above.
It is important to manage expectations regarding the crowds; Hokokuji’s beauty has made it a centerpiece of Kamakura tourism. During peak holiday seasons or weekends, the narrow paths can become congested, potentially detracting from the Zen atmosphere. For those who find the crowds overwhelming, a short five-minute walk leads to the nearby Jomyoji Temple. Jomyoji also features a traditional tea house with a stunning view of a dry landscape garden, typically offering a much quieter and more contemplative environment for tea. Despite the popularity, the sheer verticality and color of Hokokuji’s grove remain an essential Kamakura experience.
