Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖, Chūzenjiko) is a scenic highland lake situated in the Okunikko region, west of the main Nikko town area. Formed approximately 20,000 years ago when the volcanic eruption of Mount Nantai dammed the Daiya River, it sits at an altitude of 1,269 meters, making it Japan’s highest natural lake. Its crystal-clear waters and cool summer climate historically made it a premier retreat for international diplomats, a legacy still visible in the historic villas dotted along its banks.
The town of Chuzenji Onsen, located on the lake’s northeastern corner, serves as the area’s primary hub. This small resort area contains a selection of restaurants and souvenir shops and acts as the main departure terminal for the sightseeing ferry. Within walking distance are several of Nikko’s most famous landmarks, including the thunderous Kegon Falls and the Tochigi Prefecture Nikko Natural Museum. Following the northern shores a short distance further brings visitors to the beautiful Ryuzu Falls.
Various water activities are offered near the town, including the popular sightseeing ferry which provides a unique perspective of the rugged coastline. However, the most spectacular views of Lake Chuzenji are found from higher elevations. Hikers often ascend Mount Nantai to the north for a bird’s-eye view, while those traveling by car prefer the Lake Chuzenji Observation Deck located along the Hangetsuyama mountain road to the south. During autumn, the lake is particularly breathtaking as the surrounding slopes burst into vibrant shades of red and gold.
